<p>All hype and controversy aside, YouTube&#8217;s numbers are impressive:</p>
<p><strong>85%</strong> online video market share in the US<br />
<strong>#4</strong> site globally in terms of overall traffic<br />
<strong>#2</strong> site globally for search<br />
<strong>20</strong> <strong>hours</strong> of video uploaded every minute<br />
<strong>5 Billion</strong> video streams a month<br />
<strong>#2</strong> time suck behind network television<br />
&#8230;etc.</p>
<p>The folks at ReelSEO posted a <a href="http://www.reelseo.com/video-marketing-strategy-hosted-versus-posted-video/#17">great article</a> in the fall that compared the options of &#8216;Hosting&#8217; your video versus &#8216;Posting&#8217; (placing it on a free hosting site like YouTube) and considered nineteen variables that should influence your decision. Their conclusion: &#8220;<em>Unless your business is dependent on monetization of content (you <em>are</em></em> <em>Hulu), chances are that the odds will be in favour of posting video.</em>&#8221;</p>
<p>The biggest complaint about YouTube is that it is a big messy sandbox where you can&#8217;t control how your video is being presented. That&#8217;s true, but it&#8217;s important to remember that YouTube is more than just a place to post your video for free &#8211; it&#8217;s also a marketing platform. Here are five reasons why you should place your marketing video on YouTube (regardless of whether you also host them on your own site):</p>

Yes, you do lose some control over how your video is presented on YouTube, that&#8217;s the down-side of social media &#8211; the single biggest issue for companies deciding if and how to engage the great social media experiment. Ideally, if you have a video sitemap on your website with proper <a href="http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&amp;answer=80472">mRSS</a> feed Google should be able to find and promote your video as well. Why not do both? As well, you benefit from metatagging your video content on YouTube and linking back to your own website to help improve your site&#8217;s pagerank.</p>

Content marketing will have the greatest potential to influence your brand in the future. Traditional marketers will argue that it&#8217;s a waste of time to place their videos on YouTube because no one is looking for them and no one is going to find them. That&#8217;s true. No one is looking for your traditional marketing video because it talks about you and your products and no one cares much about you or your products. If instead, you post a really informative video that solves a specific problem that your customers are facing your video will not only get found, it will get shared. &#8216;Yes, but we can&#8217;t just give stuff away,&#8221; you might respond. Your customer may not frequent YouTube but I would bet that someone who knows and is trusted by your customer does.</p>

Free doesn&#8217;t necessarily mean cheap either. YouTube continues to upgrade it&#8217;s service every month with things like better support for HD video, interactivity, metrics, mobile integration (i.e. the only easy way to get video on an iPhone at the moment) etc.</p>

The other problem is that most people just aren&#8217;t that compelling on camera so there is little, to no value of a talking head &#8211; and often it&#8217;s a distraction. <p>We tend to take most things in life on face value. The earth is round, the universe is expanding, the internet is slow, but improving. This slow progression and acceptance of our &#8216;realities&#8217; also tends to stop us from seeing what&#8217;s just around the corner. An example:</p>
<p>Imagine if television in the 1950&#8242;s evolved the same way that the internet has.  What if TV in its infancy was little more than radio with text &#8211; much like the early stages of the web.  What if television started with many, many channels but they all offered slow text, perhaps a few graphics. Over time, maybe ten years or more the television broadcast networks evolved to allow some blinking graphics, then motion graphics via flash files that allowed you to see moving images accompanied with text. How powerful a medium would TV have been up to that point. Would it have consumed our lives the way it has? Would it become the focal point of our entertainment, our advertising, our news consumption?</p>
<p>With the Internet today we are close (but not quite there) to where television started over fifty years ago.  Video is widely viewable today online around the world but the experience varies considerably. That will change over the next few years as good or great quality video will be delivered to any screen you want it on (tv, computer, mobile devise). When that happens this will have a profound effect on how business communicate and evolve. Like the frog in the slowly warming pot of water, many businesses won&#8217;t even notice the change.</p>
<p>What makes the impact that much more significant is that all of the televisions are connected, everyone is creating their own television shows and you can watch what you want, wherever and whenever you want. Context is everything and the companies that win in this game will be the companies that can produce contextually relevant video products for their audiences. Content that has real value (not commercials), content that people want to share and content that changes how people see and do things.</p>
<p>No, text isn&#8217;t going away (in spite of the recent pain in the print industry) in our lifetime but we are entering a time where new visual languages, graphic interfaces and video content will change how businesses communicate.</p>

<p>Websites don&#8217;t matter. The content on them and the content that gets consumed and shared (wherever) is what matters.</p>
<p>I recently responded to a blog article that posed the question &#8220;are corporate websites dead?&#8221;  My take was that the purpose and function of corporate websites is changing &#8211; they will still serve as a repository for corporate information but the days of websites being a &#8216;destination&#8217; for information about the things you do are long gone. An Example:</p>
<p>Recent changes to driving laws where I live now make it illegal to hold/use a cell phone while driving. I needed to pick up a good quality Bluetooth headset. While scanning some recent tweets I noticed a comment about a new Plantronics Bluetooth headset. I followed the link to a YouTube video. It sounded interesting but I wasn&#8217;t convinced. I then viewed a number of related reviews on YouTube that seemed more credible and decided that this was indeed the device that suited my needs. I Googled to find the best price and ordered the product online. I never went to the Plantronics website &#8211; there was no reason to. I know the company and have purchased products from them before so there were no credibility issues to investigate.</p>
<p>The user generated videos I viewed provided good general information but ultimately the more professionally created videos sold me. The whole process took ten minutes and at the end of it I felt very informed and very comfortable making a purchase decision.  Would I have been as confident if I just went to the Plantronics site and consumed their literature? No way. Would I have been as comfortable if I went to my local electronics store and waited to listen to an inexperienced sales clerk sell me on equipment he may or may not have a lot of real experience with? No.</p>
<p>We are moving from the &#8216;text web&#8217; to the &#8216;next web&#8217; ( or &#8216;web something dot something&#8217;) and many companies still don&#8217;t see it coming. I&#8217;d rather watch a video review or video product demo than read product literature because video and other rich media content show me things that a document cannot. It&#8217;s also easier to make value judgments about the presenter and the content.</p>
<p>There is huge value in showing your product/service being used, showing people talking about their experiences with the product and showing how it clearly benefits the potential buyer.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s the content (and where that content is seen) that matters, not the website and the implications of this reach far beyond simple consumer products. All companies have to take into account how social media, rich media, mobile engagement, word of mouth, and especially the creation of truly valuable content is going to affect their brand and their business. Even companies with long sales cycles that involve complex buying decisions need to consider how they are going to engage the &#8216;next web.&#8217;</p>

<p>Let&#8217;s assume for the sake of argument that Microsoft made this video lame on purpose.</p>
<p>What&#8217;s the point? To generate buzz? Mission accomplished I suppose, but it&#8217;s not the type of buzz  a company should be promoting. Microsoft has turned the comment feature off on the YouTube channel it sits on so if they are trying to generate buzz, they don&#8217;t want it recorded. So far the comments on various blogs break down roughly between the following:</p>
<p>1. This video being six minutes of your life that you will never get back (I only lost two of those minutes)<br />
2. Criticism of the acting, the film work and just about anything else imaginable about the video<br />
3. Microsoft providing another reason for people to switch to Apple.</p>
<p>I can&#8217;t see much value in that buzz. You could start hurling farm animals from the roof of your corporate headquarters and that would generate a buzz as well. It probably wouldn&#8217;t move much product however.</p>
<p>Microsoft lost their way with the Seinfeld/Gates ads, which tried to be funny but were not. They then adopted &#8216;lame&#8217; as the new corporate video standard in their <a href="http://www.onemarketmedia.com/blog/2009/01/microsoft-reinvents-lame/">Songsmith  music &#8211; thing</a>. Now they have circled the wagons around &#8216;just plain bad&#8217;. Maybe bad is the new good but I can&#8217;t imagine how this will help the brand.</p>
<p>Of course the other possibility is that Microsoft actually thought this was a good promotion. That would be really bad.</p>

<p>Good effort&#8230;  but the execution is off the mark.</p>
<p>Like every tourist destination in the world, the State of Florida is looking for new ways to attract visitors during tough economic times. They engaged <a href="http://www.sparkbrand.com/"> Spark </a>- a Tampa agency to help them build a &#8216;social video campaign&#8217; to spread the word and &#8216;Share a little sunshine.&#8217;</p>
<p>The promotion began with the above video which is basically a call to action to all Floridians to help boost tourist trade &#8211; an integral part of the Florida economy. So far so good.  {Unfortunately the campaign got off to a bumpy start as many YouTube posts complained that the poster board concept (which goes back to  Bob Dylan&#8217;s 1965 <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-xIulyVsG8">Subterranean Homesick Blues Video video</a>) was &#8216;stolen&#8217; from a very touching YouTube video entitled <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCeX--Tz1cc">Mark by Ben </a>- a plea by a Florida boy to help find work for his father.}</p>
<p>A <a href="http://www.visitflorida.com/share/">website</a> and promotional campaign was created to encourage keen Floridians to pass along the good word. The website includes one of three commercials &#8211; &#8216;Romance&#8217;, &#8216;family&#8217;, &#8216;friends&#8217; that participants are encouraged to forward with the promise of a chance to win valuable prizes with each new email sent.</p>
<p> The State missed a huge opportunity here. Offering a prize for emailing these videos to friends and family is a good idea but I don&#8217;t think it&#8217;s enough. Sure it&#8217;s easy to do and sweepstakes and contests will always guarantee a certain amount of interaction. I just don&#8217;t believe that the recipients, if they actually watch the commercials, will care. If someone sent me an email with a tourist commercial from their town I may start watching it, but it better be really good, or have a compelling message or story. These videos were obviously created on a very tight budget and certainly don&#8217;t reinforce all of the beautiful stereotypes of the Sunshine State. These stereotypes,  (Eiffel Tower, Venetian Canals, Manhattan Skyline, etc.) are one of the main reasons people choose travel destinations. Yes, reminding people of important social hooks (friends, family and romance) is interesting but there is limited direct connection to Florida other than the fact that someone from the state may (or may not) have forwarded it to you.</p>
<p>There is a place for high quality video and a place for lower-budget video. The problem is that the lower quality video better have something else going for it or it won&#8217;t get noticed.</p>
<p>A better option would have been to create or purchase a lot of excellent quality b-roll video and encourage Floridians to create their own tourist videos using as much of the supplied high quality b-roll video as they wanted. The uptake might have been more limited but the viral potential for these videos would have been a hundred times greater &#8211; as would the impact.</p>
<p>A contest to forward commercials is not a social marketing campaign, it&#8217;s a contest &#8211; that&#8217;s it. Give people the incentives (the contest and the &#8216;Help support your state&#8217; video) AND give them the tools to create compelling videos with themselves in the video &#8211; now you have the potential for some exponential growth in both viewership and impact.</p>
<p>Some videos would be great &#8211; especially if you give the people excellent source material to insert in the videos and some would be pretty bad. But even the bad ones would be good because they would have real people in them and these people would want to forward these videos on to their friends and family and their family and friends <strong>would want to watch them</strong> and forward them on to other people.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, this campaign results in the worst of both worlds &#8211; lower budget commercials with limited social uptake.</p>

<p>When you own a premium brand you have to spend premium dollars to support it.</p>
<p>Channel has just released their newest commercial / mini-movie and as before, have done a wonderful job. Last time it was Nicole Kidman <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfoMbir_Qd4&amp;feature=related">in a three minute short film </a>(or a three minute long commercial). This time around Audrey Tautou &#8211; one of France&#8217;s national treasures &#8211; graces the screen for Channel. North Americans might remember her as &#8216;Amelie&#8217; in one of the few French films to get theatre time back in 2001. The Director of that film &#8211; Jean-Pierre Jeunet directs this commercial and was given a free hand in creating Channel&#8217;s newest filmette. Naturally he cast his favourite actress (it didn&#8217;t hurt that Tautou is also playing Coco Channel in the recently released film &#8217;Coco Avant Channel&#8217; in France) in the lead role.</p>
<p>The story (not that it matters a whit) centres around a chance encounter on a train to Istanbul. Tautou spends the remaining two minutes waiting and hoping to hook up with the handsome stranger. A sudden romance on a night train to an exotic destination &#8211; ya, it`s cliche. Romance and mystery and the promise of adventure &#8211; that`s what you buy when you drop $100 or more for a little bottle of purfume &#8211; the promise of something exciting. That`s exactly what Channel is selling, and they are quite good at it.</p>
<p>You have to give Jeunet top marks for his direction. He spared no expense (watch `<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzYFQXmGh1k&amp;eurl=http%3A%2F%2Fbreadandpassion%2Ewordpress%2Ecom%2F&amp;feature=player_embedded">the making of</a>` to see what kind of coin they dropped on this little video) at creating some asbolutely stunning sequences. He`s come a long way since his last big North American film - he directed the last Alien film (I think it was called Alien Abomination). Like the perfume Jeunet is selling, this video won`t be for everyone  but for those who it targets, he hits the mark perfectly.</p>

<div class="KonaBody"><a href="http://thisaintflint.ca/">This Ain&#8217;t Flint</a> is a campaign developed by <a href="http://www.alphabetcreative.net/">Alphabet Creative</a> for <a href="http://www.ncc.ca/">Newcap Radio</a> ostensibly to remind the good folks of Ottawa, Canada to stop whining because things are really not that bad &#8211; compared to the economic hardship that Flint, Michigan has had to face. The Newcap radio group has put a lot of money and effort into a campaign that includes video, a website, transit ads, and other promotional activities. </div>
<div class="KonaBody">We live in one of the best cities in one of the best countries in the world. We are privileged beyond any reasonable measure.  I wish this campaign would go away. I&#8217;ve tried to ignore it and the discussion around it for the last couple of weeks. Problem is, it&#8217;s hard to ignore. I keep driving by &#8220;This Ain&#8217;t Flint&#8221; transit ads every day. So if I can&#8217;t will it away&#8230; the next best thing to do is to rate it. Here is how I would score this campaign:</div>
<div class="KonaBody"><strong>Embarrassment.</strong>  <strong>10/10 </strong>They knocked it out of the park with embarrassment. I have friends and relatives in Michigan and I am ashamed to be associated (geographically) with this campaign. Read a couple US blogs to get a sense for how this campaign is been perceived south of the border. Ouch.</div>
<div class="KonaBody"><strong>Harmfullness  8/10 </strong>. A bit more planning could have given the campaign a higher harm score. This campaign will probably affect tourism, trade or anything else with the good folks in Flint / Michigan / US &#8230; frankly anyone who needs a reason to dislike our Nation&#8217;s Capital. &#8220;Hey honey come here, Ottawa looks real nice compared to Flint&#8230; let&#8217;s go there this summer.&#8221; (Of course this isn&#8217;t the intent of the video and campaign&#8230; just the outcome.)</div>
<div class="KonaBody"><strong>Confusion 5/10</strong>. Hard to rate this one. The message is absolutely clear (Ottawa isn&#8217;t as hard done by as Flint )- so I&#8217;d give this part a fail.  But the purpose of the video is a mystery so I&#8217;d give the campaign folks full marks for confusion here. What&#8217;s the point? I don&#8217;t get it. The demonic baby, the strange video, the lack of an obvious audience, or purpose. They didn&#8217;t make it to get people to buy more radio ads so what was the purpose?</div>
<div class="KonaBody"><strong>Creepiness</strong>. <strong>10 / 10</strong>. The freaky doll was a masterstroke! Nothing picks up the spirits each day like the bus shelter image of a horror movie doll. Bravo!</div>
<div class="KonaBody"><strong>Lack of Originality</strong>. <strong>8  /10</strong>. Everyone knows that viral video is all about copying something that has already been done. Kudo&#8217;s to the &#8216;Roger and Me&#8217; treatment in the first half of the video and the shockingly disjoint Ottawa Tourism video in the second half. Although &#8216;Freaky Doll&#8217; has been done many times before (still a huge &#8216;Chucky&#8217; fan),  it hasn&#8217;t been done in conjunction with an &#8216;economic optimism&#8217; video before so I had to knock a few marks off  here.</div>
<div class="KonaBody"><strong>Ballsiness</strong>. <strong>9/10</strong>. You have to have Kahunas to launch this campaign knowing that uncreative, tree-hugging, left-wing sensitive types will find something to dislike about it. A change of heart &#8211; putting the video up on YouTube and then quickly removing it &#8211; cost the campaign a perfect score. (Why purposely avoid using the best free social media channel on the  planet?) All comments are good comments right!</div>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It&#8217;s been a slow build since the authors of the <a href="http://www.cluetrain.com/book/95-theses.html">Cluetrain Manifesto </a>told us in 1999 that &#8216;markets are conversations&#8221; and that &#8216;thanks to the web, markets are becoming better informed, smarter and more demanding of qualities missing from most business organizations.&#8221; A tech bubble, a tech bust, a resurgent web 2.0 and a global economic crisis later, we are starting to see companies internalize the vision and promise of social media that the Cluetrain conductors outlined a decade ago. An example:</p>
<p>A <a href="http://adage.com/digital/article?article_id=135943">recent article </a>in Adage featuring Simon Clift, CMO of Unilever and minder of one of the largest marketing budgets on the planet, highlights the keyote speech Clift delivered at Adage&#8217;s annual digital conference. The article is well worth the read.</p>
<p>In his speech Clift covers everything from consumer activism to the oxymoronic &#8216;corporate consience&#8217; and declares that many companies who don&#8217;t adapt &#8216;simply won&#8217;t survive this accelerated natural selection.&#8221;</p>
<p>Adage concludes the article with a list of new rules for marketing which include &#8216;Listening is more important than talking&#8217; and &#8216;PR and Marketing are now the same thing.&#8221;</p>
<p>Sure, we&#8217;ve heard it all before but marketers are no different than consumers. We tend to wait until the groundswell has shifted us from our comfortable position before we act. Once the big companies adopt new behaviours it&#8217;s no longer a trend. It&#8217;s the new reality.</p>
